confirmation

"Confirmation...is the sacrament which gives the Holy Spirit in order to root us more deeply in the divine filiation, incorporate us more firmly into Christ, strengthen our bond with the Church, associate us more closely with her mission, and help us bear witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds" (Catechism, 1316).

Sacrament of Confirmation

At St. Albert the Great Parish, we celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation every year for children in grades 6 and above. It is generally celebrated during the spring. Preparation for the reception of this sacrament takes place in the parish school and CCD Program. Parents whose children are enrolled in private Catholic schools should contact the to make arrangements for Confirmation.

Candidates are required by Canon Law to have a sponsor. Sponsors for the sacrament of Confirmation must meet the same requirements as a godparent for baptism. The Church encourages that the sponsor be one of the candidate's godparents whenever possible. Doing so is a visible sign of the connection between Baptism and Confirmation. However, another person who meets the requirements may be selected if necessary.

  • A child must have at least one eligible godparent; he or she may have two godparents, in which case one is a man and the other is a woman.
  • The godparent must not be a parent of the one to be baptized.
  • The godparent must be:
    • at least sixteen years of age;
    • fully-initiated Catholic; that is, he or she has received Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion;
    • a practicing Catholic; that is, he or she attends Mass every Sunday and holyday, receives the sacraments regularly, and, if married, is married in the Church.
    • Along with an eligible godparent, a baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic Christian church or ecclesial community (i.e., Episcopal, Protestant, evangelical, etc.) may be admitted as a Christian witness to the baptism.

High school aged teens and those adults who have not been confirmed should contact for information about our RCIA process. These individuals are prepared for reception of this sacrament through the RCIA.
